Central Records serves as the repository of all Department records and is located on the 2nd Floor of Police Headquarters. Records are maintained for various lengths of time ranging from a few days to, in cases of “historically significant” events, eternity. The retention periods are determined by the Library of Virginia. Central Records is responsible for responding to most Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests as well as all Subpoena Duces Tecums. Citizens may request record checks/criminal histories, copies of accident reports and offense reports through Central Records. (Please note that not all records are releasable.) In addition, Taxi Permits, Concealed Weapon’s Permits and fingerprinting for employment, foster care, etc. are also processed through Central Records.
