The Emergency Communications Center (ECC) is the 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for citizens and visitors to the City of Chesapeake, Virginia needing assistance from Police, Fire or Emergency Medical Services in emergency and non-emergency situations. All public safety personnel are dispatched and tracked by emergency communications personnel.
Typically, the Emergency Communications Center processes about 500,000 telephone calls per year. During 2010, the Emergency Dispatch Center assigned over 250,000 message numbers for public safety calls for service. Also, the Emergency Communications Center transmitted about 2,500,000 outgoing 800 MHz radio transmissions and received around 4,000,000 incoming 800MHz radio transmissions in 2010.
The computer aided dispatch system (CAD) allows emergency communications personnel to efficiently and professionally monitor the safety of persons calling 9-1-1 and all Police, Fire and EMS personnel in the City, as well as many other state and local agency personnel. The Emergency Communications Center and its personnel are partly responsible for the good public image and extremely low crime rate experienced in the City of Chesapeake. The Emergency Communications Center may be reached for emergencies by calling 9-1-1 from most any telephone within the City of Chesapeake, Virginia.
