Chesapeake Alert Information on Data Loss
The Chesapeake Alert emergency notification system recently experienced a major technical failure, and most of the subscriber information was lost. We have been working to restore the system, and it is now ready to be used again.
I’m asking that you please take a few moments to re-subscribe to Chesapeake Alert. I appreciate how busy you are, and I apologize for the inconvenience. But Chesapeake Alert is a critical element in the City’s emergency communications plan, and your participation increases the chances that important information will reach you during an emergency.
If you’re ready to re-register, go here:
• Home Page (includes introduction)
• Go straight to New User form
If you plan to sign up to receive text messages, reading this first will make it easier.
Still not convinced that it’s worth your time? Here are more reasons to register:
Choose how you receive your information. The City purchases home telephone numbers of Chesapeake residents that the Police, Fire and other departments can use during emergencies (non-emergency use is not permitted). But over 20% of you no longer have a home phone. And we understand that you don’t necessarily want to wait until you get home to receive urgent information. If you register, you can receive notifications via cell phone, email and/or text. Including your address ensures that you receive notifications relevant to your area.
Receive notices for other areas. Would you like to receive emergency information for another address, such as your business or the home of an elderly parent? You can register an additional account for that address.
Keep up to date on other City information. You can also subscribe to non-emergency information, such as road closures and Parks and Recreation events. You can choose which additional messages you would like to receive.
We are trying to reach as many people as possible, but we do not have email addresses for all subscribers. If you are willing, I would appreciate it if you would share this information with your neighbors and friends via email and your social networks. You’ll find a link on the City’s Facebook page: http://facebook.com/CityofChesapeake, that you can share.
Thank you,
