The Department of Human Resoureces provides employee relation services to City employees and supervisors on work-related matters. Staff members are available to answer questions regarding policy, discuss options to address concerns, and to determine and provide the applicable resources to resolve conflict. Grievances

In order to effectively accomplish the work of the City, it is necessary for open communication to exist between supervisors and their employees. Toward that end, the City of Chesapeake has a Grievance Policy and Procedure designed to provide a formal means to resolve problems which may arise in connection with the employee's working environment. Employees are encouraged to discuss work-related problems with their supervisors before using the formal Grievance Procedure.

Service Award Recognition Program

The City of Chesapeake's Service Award Recognition Program recognizes employees who have reached a 5 year employment plateau. All employees receive a certificate signed by the Mayor, City Manager, and Department Head.

Employees with 5-10 years of service receive a lapel pin at a small ceremony in their own department. Employees who have achieved 15 years or more of service with the City are invited to a breakfast held in April of year. Employees with 20 years of service receive a jeweled lapel pin at the breakfast. Employees with 25 or more years select their gift from a gift selection form distributed with their invitation to the breakfast. The Mayor and City Manager present gifts for employees with 15 years or more of service at the breakfast.
