Neighborhood Leadership Program


The Chesapeake Neighborhood Leadership Program is accepting registrations for the fall 2011 Class. The program offers participants the opportunity to learn successful neighborhood organizing, strategic planning and problem-solving, developing partnerships, and effective communications. Classes start September 29th and are free to Chesapeake residents. For more information, call the Office of Neighborhood Coordination at 382-6456.

The inaugural class of Chesapeake’s Neighborhood Leadership Program took place during Fall 2004. Participants increase their knowledge and skills to lead neighborhood improvement groups and increase the effectiveness of neighborhood organizations through strategic planning and partnerships.

  • Courses include:
    • Successful Organizing for Neighborhoods
    • Developing Vision and Mission Statements
    • Strategic Planning and Problem Solving
    • Neighborhood Improvement Initiatives
    • Accessing Resources & Developing Partnerships
    • Effective Communication & Presentations
  • Participants meet once a week during a six-week period.

Chesapeake's Fall 2009 Neighborhood Leadership Class was held from October through November. The Class Celebration was held on November 19, 2009, at the Chesapeake Conference Center, where 18 graduates were recognized. City Councilman Dwight Parker was the keynote speaker for the ceremony.

Chesapeake's Spring 2007 Neighborhood Leadership Class was held from March through April 2007. The class celebration occurred on April 19, 2007 at the Chesapeake Conference Center. Fourteen participants were recognized. Chesapeake Vice Mayor Dwight Parker gave remarks about citizen involvement and community partnerships.

A Class Celebration was held at the Chesapeake Conference Center involving almost 100 family members, friends, neighbors and city officials. Participants were formally presented to the Mayor and City Council at their meeting on November 22, 2005.

Neighborhood Leadership Program – Fall 2004

The first group of residents to participate in Chesapeake’s Neighborhood Leadership Program completed training in December 2004. Sixteen residents were recognized during a class celebration at the Chesapeake Central Library, attended by family members and elected officials.

Participants increased their knowledge and skills to lead neighborhood organizations through learning about strategic planning and partnerships.
