Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Emergency Food & Shelter Program allocates federal funds for the provision of food and shelter to the neediest areas. U.S. Department of Education manages the Education for Homeless Children and Youth grants for state and local activities. Among other things, the program supports an Office for Coordination of Education of Homeless Children and Youth in each state, which gathers comprehensive information about homeless children and youth and barriers to their regular attendance at school. These grants also help state education agencies to ensure that homeless children have equal access to free appropriate public education.
