Mutual Education Support and Advocacy (MESA)
Weekly Classes for Family Members of Persons with Mental Illness
This free, 12 week series is for parents, siblings, spouses and other relatives of persons with mental illnesses. Sessions will resume in the Fall of 2013. Meetings start at 6:30 p.m. and are held at the Community Services Board's main office.
The Chesapeake Community Services Board is located at 224 Great Bridge Boulevard, one-half mile west of Oscar Smith High School between Oscar Smith High and Battlefield Boulevard.
This class is facilitated by Tommie Cubine, a mental health professional with 40 years experience who also has a family member with a mental illness. Read Tommie's biography here: Tommie Cubine Biography
Topics will include:
- symptoms, causes & treatment of major mental illnesses
- guidelines for coping
- preventing relapses
- accessing the mental health system
- community resources
- advocacy information
Support among families is a vital component of these classes.
