A. All twelve board members are appointed by the Chesapeake City Council. Appointments are for three years and a Board member can only serve a maximum of nine years in a lifetime. At least, one of the members must be a consumer receiving services at the time of appointment. No employee or board member of an organization which receives funding from any CSB can be appointed to the CSB Board of Directors. The Board can not be composed of a majority of elected or appointed local government officials.

Q. Are there any other requirements I should know about?

A. To be an active participant on the Board of Directors takes a great deal of time. Expect to spend at least four hours a month in Board meetings or board subcommittee meetings and at least 2 to 3 hours reading materials in preparation for the Board meeting.

The issues the Chesapeake Community Services Board of Directors deals with are very complicated and a knowledge base about certain subjects has to be developed over time. Based on this the Board is very strict about requiring that Board members attend at least 75% or 9 meetings a year.
