\On Saturday, November 9, 2019, the United States Colored Troops Descendants (U.S.C.T.D.), (a division of the Bells Mills Historical Society, Inc., based in Chesapeake) are hosting its “21st Annual Afro-Union Hampton Roads Area Patriot Heroes Veterans Day Salute.” The Salute will be held at the “Unknown and Known Afro-Union Civil War Soldiers Memorial” located at 1001 Bells Mill Road in Chesapeake 23322. (This Memorial is the only one of its kind in the Commonwealth of Virginia dedicated to saluting Afro-Union Soldier and Sailor Patriot Heroes).  

The Salute begins at 10:30am and ends at 12noon. The theme for this year is “HIGHLIGHTING AFRO-UNION VETERANS PATRIOT HEROES WHO FOUGHT TO END THE ‘AFRICAN HOLOCAUST EXPERIENCE’ IN AMERICA – FORT WAGNER, JULY 18, 1863 TO APPROMATTOX COURT HOUSE, APRIL 9, 1865.”  

This Salute includes the over 209,145 Afro-Union Soldiers, the over 30,000 Afro-Union Sailors and the over 50,000 Afro-Union Soldiers and Sailors who lost their lives in the American Civil War. “They volunteered to fight to save the United States of America and to defeat Slavery.”
