May is National Bike Month to showcase the many benefits of bicycling- and encourage more folks to give biking a try.” It's also a great way to meet other cycling enthusiasts, be environmentally friendly, avoid commuting traffic and save money on gas.
WHEREAS, for more than a century, the bicycle has been an important part of the lives of most Americans; and
WHEREAS, today, millions of Americans engage in bicycling as an environmentally sound form of transportation, an excellent form of fitness, and to provide quality family recreation; and
WHEREAS, the education of cyclists and motorists as to the proper and safe operation of bicycles is important to ensure the safety and comfort of all users; and
WHEREAS, independent cyclists throughout our City are promoting greater public awareness of bicycle operations and safety education in an effort to reduce accidents, injuries and fatalities; and
WHEREAS, the City of Chesapeake has a Bicycle/Trails Advisory Committee that will be promoting bicycling and bicycle safety throughout our beautiful City during the month of May 2020 by way of various promotional activities; and
WHEREAS, the Chesapeake City Council promotes bicycling through the adoption of relevant policies in the Comprehensive Plan along with a Trails Plan showing facilities worthy of future development; and
WHEREAS, there are currently numerous bicycle facilities within City parks that will be promoted on the Parks, Recreation and Tourism webpage during Bike Month, featuring the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail, Oak Grove Lake Park, Northwest River Park and Indian River Park; and
WHEREAS, the City of Chesapeake co-sponsors the Chesapeake Criterium Bike Race to be held on August 8, 2020, at the Chesapeake Civic Center Complex; and
WHEREAS, the City of Chesapeake Bicycle and Trails Advisory Committee sponsors the Chesapeake BikeFest; and
WHEREAS, the League of American Bicyclists has established May as “NATIONAL BICYCLE MONTH” and the City of Chesapeake supports this designation.
